Housing Plan
Announcement – March 26, 2008:
The Manitoba Urban Native Housing Association is pleased to announce the completion of the ‘Winnipeg Aboriginal Housing Plan’.
MUNHA is extremely grateful to the Urban Aboriginal Strategy, Winnipeg Homeless and Housing Initiative (Service Canada), Aboriginal Northern Affairs Manitoba, the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation, and the City of Winnipeg for all of their support in seeing the completion of the project.
As well, MUNHA is thankful for the community support and participation received from the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Winnipeg, Métis Association, Mothers of a Red Nation Women’s Council of Manitoba, the Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg, Ma Mawi Wi Chi Iata Centre, Kinew Housing, Native Women’s Transition Centre, the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, and the Institute of Urban Studies. Purpose
The purpose of the MUNHA Housing Plan Project is to identify the housing needs for the MUNHA membership and the Aboriginal community in the City of Winnipeg, and to identify the strategies and initiatives to address those needs.
The method of achieving its objective’s is to, allow for and foster, realistic, pragmatic, and well-conceived response to housing needs as identified by the MUNHA membership and stakeholders, within a flexible framework that is able to accommodate changes in priorities and emerging housing issues and concerns

Goals
Goal #1: Identify the history and characteristics of Aboriginal Social Housing in the City of Winnipeg.
Goal #2: Define Aboriginal Social Housing principles, vision and goals in the City of Winnipeg.
Goal #3: Develop Aboriginal Housing Plan Goals, Objectives, and Initiatives.
Goal #4: Developing Benchmarks for Success.
Goal #5: Obtain Ratification from the Aboriginal Community Plan.
Goal #6: Implement the MUNHA Housing Plan into Action.
Outcomes
The MUNHA Housing Plan outcome is to;

Present the housing needs and challenges that face Aboriginal families currently waiting to access Aboriginal Social Housing in the City of Winnipeg;

Develop innovative solutions that address housing challenges, issues, and concerns;

To work as full and equal participants with its partners, associates and neighbors, in addressing shared issues and concerns;

Increase the capacity of MUNHA, its membership, and Winnipeg’s Aboriginal community to assume control and direction over matters that impact them directly in the Social Housing sector; and,
-
To demonstrate to key decision-makers in all ranks of government (at the representative and bureaucratic level), and stakeholders, the community priorities within a five-year time period, so that they be able to better understand as to how they can best serve Winnipeg’s Aboriginal community.
Work Update – February 2007
Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS):
The UAS is supporting the housing plan in the area of applied research by identifying the impacts of the expiration of operating agreements and a feasibility study on transferring housing administration to an Aboriginal housing authority.
Winnipeg Homeless and Housing Initiative (WHHI)
The WHHI is supporting the housing plan by supporting the community engagement component.
Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Manitoba (ANA)
The ANA supports the housing plan through a feasibility study on the development of the housing database for the membership of MUNHA, and is now supporting a pilot housing database project.
The City of Winnipeg
The City of Winnipeg will provide funding, experience and perspective.
